Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis
I’m excited to now offer Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) as part of my nutrition and wellness practice. HTMA is a non-invasive test that measures the levels and ratios of key minerals and heavy metals in your hair. Because minerals are involved in nearly every metabolic process in the body, this test offers valuable insight into your metabolism, stress response, energy production, thyroid function, and detoxification capacity.
Why Hair Tissue Testing?
Unlike blood tests, which show a snapshot of what’s circulating at a given moment, HTMA reflects what’s happening inside the cells over the past several months. This helps identify underlying imbalances that may contribute to symptoms like fatigue, mood changes, poor sleep, hair loss, blood sugar swings, or hormone challenges.
By combining HTMA results with nutrition and lifestyle support, I can create a personalized plan to help rebalance minerals, support your body’s natural healing processes, and restore optimal function — from the inside out.
What HTMA Can Help Us Explore
When interpreted carefully, these patterns can offer valuable context for understanding symptoms like fatigue, mood changes, poor sleep, hair loss, or difficulty building resilience. HTMA can help identify patterns such as:
- Mineral deficiencies or excesses
- Imbalances in key mineral ratios related to adrenal and thyroid activity
- Trends associated with blood sugar regulation
- Signs of toxic metal accumulation (such as mercury, lead, or aluminum)
- How your body may be responding to stress over time
Free HTMA Consult
Curious if HTMA could help you get to the root of your symptoms?
Book a free 20 minute consultation to learn how mineral testing can give you deeper insight into your health and guide a personalized plan for more energy, balance, and well-being.
How the HTMA Process Works
1.
Initial Consultation
We begin with a conversation about your health history, symptoms, and goals to determine if HTMA is a good fit.
2.
Hair Sample Collection
A small amount of hair is collected close to the scalp, either in-office or at home with clear instructions.
3.
Laboratory Analysis
Your sample is sent to a certified laboratory for analysis.
4.
Results Review
We review your report together, discuss patterns, and what they may mean for your body.
Hair Sample FAQs
No, I will not be pulling your hair out. I will be collecting several small samples as close to the root as possible. I will take samples from several areas along the back of the head to avoid creating any bald spots or noticable gaps
Yes, I need clean hair and free of product. Here are a list of important details for the best, contaminent free sample…
- Hair should be washed 2-4 hours before sample is to be taken
- Do not blow dry your hair – allow it to air dry
- Do not add product to your hair – if this cannot be avoided do not put product near the roots
- Untreated hair is best – allow 6+ weeks of growth so the chemical hair coloring doesn’t show inaccurate levels of minerals or heavy metals
- Do not sweat before sample is taken. This will alter the sodium levels on your test results
• • Check your shampoo for selenium & zinc (usually found in a medicated or dandruff shampoo). If possible, discontinue use for 1-2 washes before taking your sample. They can give false reading on your selenium & zinc levels
HTMA measures key minerals such as magnesium, potassium, sodium, calcium, zinc, and copper, as well as screening for toxic heavy metals like mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and aluminum.
While mineral levels themselves are important, the real insight comes from looking at the ratios between these minerals. These ratios reveal valuable information about your metabolism, thyroid and adrenal function, hormone balance, blood sugar regulation, and cardiovascular health.
When properly interpreted, HTMA can also give clues about gut and liver function, how well your body is handling stress, and whether you’re depleting nutrients too quickly due to factors like chronic stress, infection, or environmental exposures such as mold. It’s a powerful tool for understanding how your body is functioning at a deeper level — and where it needs support.
Hair provides a unique window into mineral activity during the time it was formed. As hair grows, it incorporates minerals from the internal environment of the body, creating a record of mineral patterns over approximately three months.
Unlike blood or urine tests, which reflect what is happening at a single point in time, HTMA offers a broader view of how your body has been adapting over time.
Hair collection is simple, painless, and non-invasive, making it an accessible option for many people.
Ready to move forward?
If you’re feeling curious about HTMA, you don’t have to decide everything right now. Some people prefer to start with a conversation, while others feel ready to move ahead with testing.
Both are welcome starting points.
